Chairside ATP Testing in Endodontics

Course description

This course will review the emerging role of chairside ATP bioluminescence testing in endodontics. Current endodontic treatment relies on clinical judgment, radiographs, irrigation protocols, and subjective endpoints to determine whether a canal is ready to obturate. ATP testing provides quantitative feedback on residual biologic material remaining in the root canal system, including bacteria, biofilm, pulp tissue, blood, saliva contamination from leaking restorations, and other cellular debris.

The course will discuss what ATP testing can and cannot measure, how to interpret results clinically, and how this technology may help identify cases that may benefit from additional irrigation, activation, or even additional visits before obturation. The presentation will also review current published and emerging evidence comparing ATP levels with bacterial culture/CFU findings, endotoxin levels, and different irrigation activation protocols.

Objectives

  • Describe what ATP bioluminescence testing detects in the root canal system, including bacteria, biofilm, pulp tissue, and biologic debris from blood and saliva contamination.
  • Interpret ATP results clinically, including how ATP reflects root canal cleanliness versus direct bacterial counts, and recognize sources of false-positive and false-negative readings.
  • Explain how chairside ATP testing provides real-time feedback to identify cases with missed anatomy or those requiring additional disinfection before obturation.
  • Evaluate emerging evidence supporting ATP testing in endodontics, including its relationship to bacterial culture, endotoxin data, and irrigation protocol comparisons.
